Why PDFs are hard to edit
PDF was designed to look identical everywhere, not to be edited. Inside a PDF, text is stored as positioned pieces rather than flowing paragraphs, and scanned documents contain only pictures of text. That is why copying from a PDF often produces broken lines, and why you need a converter to get an editable document back.
A good converter rebuilds paragraphs, tables and images into a Word (DOCX) file. For scanned PDFs it must also recognise the letters in the image, a process called optical character recognition (OCR).
Convert a PDF to Word in three steps
- Open the free PDF to Word converter on FreeTools Hub.
- Drop your PDF (up to 25 MB) onto the page or tap to choose it. No account is needed.
- Press Convert to Word and download the DOCX file. Open it in Microsoft Word, Google Docs, LibreOffice or Pages.
On iPhone and Android
The converter works in Safari and Chrome on phones. Tap the upload area, choose the PDF from Files, Downloads or Google Drive, and the Word file is saved to your phone when it is ready. Open it in the Word or Google Docs app to edit it.
What about scanned PDFs?
If your PDF is a scan or a photo of a document, there is no text to extract. FreeTools Hub detects this automatically and runs OCR on up to 30 pages, returning a document with the recognised text. OCR is very accurate on clear, straight scans, but always proofread names, numbers and amounts.
For the best OCR results, scan at 300 dpi, keep pages straight and avoid shadows when photographing documents with a phone.
Tips for the best conversion
- Use the original PDF rather than a re-scanned or printed copy whenever possible.
- Remove the password from protected PDFs before converting.
- Expect small adjustments for complex layouts such as magazines or multi-column brochures.
- Large PDFs over 25 MB can be split into parts with Split PDF or reduced with Compress PDF first.
- When you are done editing, use Word to PDF to turn the document back into a PDF.
Common problems and fixes
- Text appears as images in Word: the PDF was scanned. Convert again — scanned pages are detected and read with OCR automatically.
- Odd line breaks inside paragraphs: turn on “Show formatting” in Word and use Find & Replace to remove manual line breaks.
- Wrong font: install the font used in the PDF, or select all text and apply a standard font such as Calibri.
- Tables split across text boxes: the PDF was created with positioned text. Copy the rows into a new Word table if needed.
Is it safe?
Your PDF is sent over an encrypted connection, converted in an isolated temporary folder and deleted as soon as the Word file is returned. Nothing is stored or shared, and no account is required.
Frequently asked questions
Can I convert a PDF to Word without Adobe Acrobat?
Yes. FreeTools Hub converts PDFs to Word for free in your browser on any device.
Why is the formatting slightly different?
PDFs do not store layout the way Word does, so complex designs are rebuilt as closely as possible and may need small fixes.
Can I convert a PDF to Google Docs?
Convert it to DOCX first, then upload the DOCX to Google Drive and open it with Google Docs.
